A hot-water cylinder can look like a straightforward replacement purchase until you need to choose how it will be supplied. The difference between vented versus unvented water systems affects shower performance, available installation space, safety requirements and the equipment your property needs around the cylinder.

For many UK homes, the right answer comes down to one practical question: is your existing water supply and property layout better suited to a traditional gravity-fed system, or a mains-pressure stored hot-water system? Both can provide dependable hot water. The better choice depends on the building, the number of outlets in use and the standard of performance you expect.

What is a vented water system?

A vented hot-water system stores heated water in a cylinder, usually supplied by a cold-water storage cistern in the loft. As water heats up and expands, the system is protected by an open vent pipe that discharges safely over the cold-water cistern. This is where the term “vented” comes from.

The cylinder’s pressure is created by gravity rather than the incoming water main. In simple terms, the higher the cold-water cistern sits above the outlet, the more pressure is available. This arrangement has been common in UK homes for decades and remains a practical option where a loft tank is already in place.

Vented cylinders can be heated by an immersion heater, a boiler coil or a combination of both. An electric immersion-heated cylinder can be particularly useful where gas is unavailable, a property is moving towards electric heating, or a separate hot-water solution is required for an annexe or rental property.

Why vented systems still suit some homes

A vented system is often the least disruptive option when replacing like for like. If the property already has a suitable loft cistern and pipework, retaining the gravity-fed arrangement may avoid major alterations.

It can also be a sensible solution where incoming mains pressure or flow is weak. An unvented cylinder cannot create more water flow than the mains supply provides, whereas a vented system works independently of day-to-day variations in mains pressure once its storage cistern is filled.

The trade-off is outlet performance. Gravity-fed pressure can be modest, particularly in a bungalow, a flat with limited height above the bathroom, or any property where the storage cistern cannot be positioned sufficiently high. A shower may need a pump for a stronger flow, which adds equipment, electrical work and ongoing maintenance considerations.

What is an unvented water system?

An unvented hot-water cylinder is connected directly to the cold mains. It stores water at mains pressure, then supplies hot water to taps, baths and showers at a pressure that is usually far stronger than a gravity-fed system.

Rather than venting expansion into a loft tank, an unvented system uses dedicated safety controls. These typically include an expansion vessel, pressure-reducing valve, temperature and pressure relief valve, and a correctly installed discharge pipe. These components are essential, not optional extras. They control pressure as the stored water heats and provide a safe route for discharge if a fault occurs.

For homeowners upgrading bathrooms or adding multiple showers, an unvented cylinder can make a noticeable difference. With a good incoming main and a correctly sized cylinder, it can deliver balanced hot and cold pressure across the property. That means a shower is less likely to drop dramatically when another tap is opened.

The installation requirement that matters

Unvented cylinders must be installed and commissioned by a competent person qualified to work on unvented hot-water systems. In England and Wales, this work is covered by Building Regulations Part G3. Your installer should select the correct safety components, arrange compliant discharge pipework and provide the relevant certification.

This is not a job to treat as a simple cylinder swap. The incoming supply must be checked for both pressure and flow rate, as well as its ability to support the expected demand. An excellent static pressure reading alone does not guarantee a strong shower if the main cannot sustain enough flow when several outlets are running.

Vented versus unvented water systems: the practical differences

The most visible difference is pressure. A vented system relies on gravity, while an unvented system draws from the mains. In a property with a strong incoming supply, unvented hot water normally gives a more powerful, more consistent experience at showers and mixer taps.

Space is another major factor. Vented systems generally require a cold-water storage cistern in the loft or at high level. Unvented systems remove that requirement, freeing loft space and reducing the risk of issues associated with tanks, such as insulation concerns or a failed float valve. However, an unvented cylinder still needs room for the cylinder itself, expansion provision and accessible safety controls.

Installation complexity differs too. A vented replacement can be comparatively straightforward where existing tanks and pipework are in good condition. An unvented installation needs careful planning around mains supply, safety valves and discharge routes. It may cost more initially, but can be a worthwhile upgrade when stronger hot-water performance is a priority.

Both systems need sensible maintenance. A vented system benefits from checks on the cold-water cistern, open vent and any shower pump. An unvented system should have its safety controls checked in line with the cylinder manufacturer’s instructions. Keep documentation from installation and make sure relief-valve discharge routes remain visible and unobstructed.

Choosing the right cylinder size

System type does not remove the need to choose the correct capacity. A 50-litre cylinder may be suitable for a compact kitchen or single-outlet application, but it will not support a family bathroom routine. Conversely, installing an oversized cylinder for a low-demand flat can mean paying to heat water that is rarely used.

For a one-bedroom property with modest usage, a smaller cylinder may be enough. Households with one bathroom often look at mid-size capacities, while homes with multiple bathrooms, frequent baths or several occupants usually need considerably more stored hot water. Electric cylinders also need enough heating input and recovery time for the household’s pattern of use.

Think about peak demand rather than average consumption. Two consecutive showers before work, a bath in the evening, or tenants using hot water at similar times can quickly expose an undersized cylinder. An installer can help calculate the suitable capacity based on occupants, outlets, incoming supply and available electrical load.

When an electric hot-water system is the better route

If there is no gas connection, no boiler, or no practical route for a wet central-heating system, an electric cylinder can provide reliable stored hot water without combustion appliances or flues. Mains-pressure electric cylinders are especially useful for refurbishment projects, extensions and homes seeking a direct electric alternative.

For very small demands, a compact point-of-use water heater may be more efficient than heating an entire cylinder. A kitchen sink, cloakroom basin or remote utility area can benefit from hot water generated close to the outlet, reducing standing losses and waiting time. This is a different solution from a whole-home cylinder, but it can be the right one for a focused application.

If you are replacing an older gravity-fed cylinder in a home with limited mains performance, retaining a vented arrangement could be more sensible.

Finally, factor in the full installation rather than the cylinder price alone. Include safety controls, expansion equipment, discharge pipework, electrical work, commissioning and any changes to plumbing. A correctly specified system is the one that delivers enough hot water safely, efficiently and without creating an expensive problem elsewhere in the property.

The best choice is rarely the newest-looking option or the largest cylinder available. It is the system that fits your incoming supply, daily hot-water habits and installation space - then gives you dependable hot water when the household actually needs it.
