What an electric hot water cylinder does

A modern electric hot water cylinder is an insulated tank that heats water to a set temperature and stores it until you need it. Most full-size domestic models are mains-pressure, or unvented, cylinders. They take cold water directly from the mains and deliver hot water at good pressure, provided the incoming water supply is suitable.

The practical benefit is straightforward: several outlets can be used without relying on a small point-of-use heater. A correctly sized cylinder can support a family bathroom, kitchen and en-suite far more comfortably than a compact unit designed for one basin.

Electricity heats the stored water through an immersion element, controlled by a thermostat. Some cylinders can be heated on an off-peak tariff or timed to work with a solar PV system. Unvented cylinders, water pressure and safety

Most mains-pressure electric cylinders are unvented. They offer strong shower performance and avoid the need for a cold-water storage tank in the loft, but they must be installed with the correct safety controls.

An unvented system normally includes a pressure-reducing valve, expansion vessel, temperature and pressure relief valve, and a correctly routed discharge pipe. These are essential safety components, not optional extras. The cylinder must also be compatible with the property’s incoming mains pressure and flow rate. Strong static pressure alone does not guarantee good performance if the flow rate is limited by the supply pipework.

When a compact electric water heater is the better choice

A full cylinder is not always necessary. For a cloakroom basin, small kitchen, workshop or isolated annexe, a compact point-of-use water heater may be a more efficient and affordable answer. It heats a small volume close to the outlet, reducing pipe runs and avoiding the cost of maintaining a large store of hot water.

The trade-off is limited capacity. A compact unit is ideal for handwashing and light kitchen use, but it will not replace a properly sized domestic cylinder for a family bathroom. Instant electric water heaters can provide hot water on demand, although their flow and temperature performance depend heavily on their electrical rating and incoming water temperature.

Buying with the installation in mind
