A hot-water cylinder can appear to be working perfectly until the expansion vessel is missing, incorrectly sized or has lost its charge. The unvented cylinder expansion vessel is a small but essential component in a mains-pressure hot-water system. It manages the increase in water volume as stored water heats up, helping the system operate safely and preventing unnecessary discharge from the pressure relief valve.

For homeowners replacing a cylinder, landlords maintaining a rental property and installers specifying a new electric hot-water system, the right vessel is not an optional extra. It must suit the cylinder, the system pressure and the installation arrangement.

What an unvented cylinder expansion vessel does

Water expands when heated. In a vented cylinder system, this expansion can rise into a feed and expansion cistern. An unvented cylinder is sealed and supplied directly from the mains, so there is no open tank to accommodate the additional volume.

An expansion vessel provides the space needed. Inside is a flexible diaphragm, with potable water on one side and a compressed air or nitrogen charge on the other. As the water inside the cylinder heats and expands, it enters the vessel and compresses the gas cushion. When hot water is drawn off and the system cools, the vessel releases that stored volume back into the system.

This simple action keeps pressure within its intended operating range. Without it, pressure can rise rapidly during a heating cycle and force water out through the expansion relief valve. A little discharge may indicate a problem worth investigating. Repeated discharge is not something to ignore, as it can waste water, leave staining at the tundish or discharge pipe, and point to an issue with the vessel or controls.

Does every unvented cylinder need an external vessel?

Not always. Some unvented cylinders have an internal expansion vessel, while others require a separate external vessel fitted as part of the installation. The cylinder manufacturer's instructions will confirm the required arrangement.

A system may also use an expansion relief valve and other safety controls within a combination valve assembly. These components perform different jobs. The pressure-reducing valve controls incoming mains pressure, the check valve prevents expanded water travelling back into the cold supply, and the expansion vessel accepts the expanded volume. The relief valve is a safety back-up, not the normal method of dealing with expansion.

This distinction matters when replacing parts. A new pressure relief valve will not correct a failed expansion vessel. Equally, fitting a vessel with an unsuitable pressure rating or connection does not make an installation compliant.

Internal versus external expansion vessels

An internal vessel can save space and give a neater finished installation. It may be particularly useful where a cylinder is installed in an airing cupboard or utility room with limited pipework space. However, servicing access still needs consideration, and the vessel must be compatible with the cylinder model.

An external vessel offers more flexibility where the system has been designed for one. It can be mounted in an accessible position and may be easier to replace independently in future. It does, though, need secure support, correctly routed pipework and sufficient room around it for inspection and maintenance.

The best option depends on the cylinder specification, available space and the installer’s design. It is not simply a case of choosing whichever vessel looks similar to the existing one.

Choosing the correct vessel size and pressure

Expansion vessel selection is based on more than cylinder capacity. The required size is influenced by the volume of stored water, maximum operating temperature, incoming and regulated mains pressure, and the expansion relief valve setting. A larger cylinder generally needs a larger vessel, but pressure settings can change the calculation significantly.

For that reason, use the cylinder manufacturer’s stated vessel requirement where one is supplied. If a replacement is being specified for an existing system, match the original technical specification only after confirming that the cylinder, valves and operating pressures have not changed. An installer can calculate the correct size where the information is unavailable or the installation is being altered.

The vessel must also be suitable for potable-water use. Domestic hot-water expansion vessels use materials designed for contact with drinking water and for the temperatures and pressures expected in an unvented system. A vessel intended for a sealed central-heating circuit is not automatically suitable, even if its capacity appears correct.

Pre-charge pressure is equally important. Before installation, the air side of the vessel is set to a specified pressure, typically in relation to the regulated cold-water pressure. If the pre-charge is too low, the vessel may accept too much water before operating effectively. If it is too high, it may accept very little expansion at all. The correct setting must be checked with the water side depressurised, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Signs an expansion vessel may need attention

Expansion vessels do not have a fixed replacement interval. Their life depends on water conditions, system pressure, correct commissioning and general wear to the diaphragm or air charge. However, several practical symptoms can suggest the vessel needs checking:

  • Water regularly discharges from the expansion relief pipe while the cylinder heats.
  • The pressure rises noticeably during a heating cycle, then drops once hot water is used.
  • The vessel feels completely waterlogged or has lost its air charge.
  • Water appears at the air valve when its cap is removed for testing, which can indicate a damaged diaphragm.
These signs can also be caused by a faulty inlet control group, incorrect pressure settings or another installation fault. Avoid assuming the vessel is the only cause. A competent engineer should assess the full safety-control arrangement before parts are replaced.

Installation and safety requirements

Unvented hot-water cylinders operate at mains pressure and store hot water under pressure. Work on them is therefore not equivalent to changing a tap or replacing a standard heating component. In England and Wales, installation and certain work on unvented hot-water systems is subject to Building Regulations requirements, including the relevant safety provisions under Part G.

An appropriately qualified and competent installer should fit, commission and service the system. They will confirm the suitability of the cold-water supply, set the inlet controls, test safety valves, verify the discharge arrangement and ensure the expansion vessel is installed in the correct position. They should also provide the required documentation for a new or substantially altered installation.

Never isolate, cap or alter a discharge pipe because it is dripping. The discharge route is there to protect people and property if pressure or temperature rises beyond safe limits. If water is discharging, turn off the heat source if safe to do so and arrange for the system to be checked.

When replacing a vessel makes sense

Replacement is usually sensible when the diaphragm has failed, the vessel cannot retain its correct pre-charge, corrosion is visible, or the existing vessel is not rated for the system. It can also be appropriate during a cylinder upgrade, particularly where capacity, heat source or inlet control equipment is changing.

Before ordering, check the vessel capacity, maximum working pressure, connection size, potable-water approval and required pre-charge. Also check whether mounting hardware or a connecting hose is required. A physically similar vessel with the wrong specification can create further problems rather than solve the original one.

For a like-for-like replacement, clear photographs of the vessel label and the cylinder data plate can help identify the necessary specification. If those details are missing, it is safer to pause and obtain advice than to guess.
