What immersion heaters do

An immersion heater is an electric heating element fitted through the side of a hot-water cylinder. When electricity passes through the element, it heats the surrounding water. Unlike an instant water heater, an immersion heater heats a stored volume of water. That means it can support several outlets from one cylinder, including showers, baths, basins and kitchen taps. For a whole home, cylinder capacity matters more. Use programmed heating periods that reflect actual household routines. If you have an off-peak tariff, schedule the main heat-up during the lower-cost window and use a daytime boost only when needed. Insulate accessible hot-water pipework and check that the cylinder jacket or factory insulation is intact. These small measures help retain heat after the element has switched off.
