A cylinder that is too small usually reveals itself at the worst moment: halfway through the second shower, when the washing-up is waiting, or when a tenant reports that there is no hot water by evening. This cylinder sizing guide helps you match stored hot-water capacity to how a property is actually used, rather than simply choosing the largest tank that will fit in the airing cupboard.

For electric hot-water cylinders, the right size balances daily demand, available installation space, heat-up time and the type of system being fitted. A compact kitchen unit has very different requirements from a three-bedroom family home with two showers. Choosing well gives you dependable hot water without paying to heat more water than you need.

Start with the number of people and bathrooms

As a practical starting point, allow around 35 to 50 litres of stored hot water per regular occupant where the cylinder serves normal household use. This is a guide, not a fixed rule. A couple who mainly take quick showers may be comfortable with a smaller cylinder than two people who run deep baths, use a high-flow shower and wash clothes in hot cycles.

The number of bathrooms matters, but the way they are used matters more. Two bathrooms do not automatically require twice the capacity if they are rarely used at the same time. However, a home where two showers often run back-to-back needs enough stored water to cover that peak period.

For many properties, these broad ranges provide a sensible first filter:

  • 10L to 30L: handwashing, a single kitchen sink, a cloakroom basin or a small point-of-use application.

Cylinder sizing guide: think about peak demand

Daily water use can sound manageable until it is concentrated into one busy hour. A family may use very little hot water during the day, then need showers, a bath and kitchen hot water between 6pm and 8pm. The cylinder must be sized for that peak, not just the average across 24 hours.

If the property has a powerful shower, do not select solely on the assumption that every shower lasts five minutes. Ask how the household lives. Are there teenagers taking long showers? Is the bath used most evenings? Does a landlord need a practical capacity that avoids complaints between occupancies? Those answers are more useful than a simple bedroom count.

Allow for recovery time with electric cylinders

Cylinder capacity and recovery time work together. A larger cylinder holds more hot water, but it also takes longer to heat from cold. An electric immersion element commonly heats stored water at a steady rate, so a depleted cylinder may need several hours to fully recover depending on its volume, element rating and starting water temperature.

For households with predictable routines, this is often straightforward. Timed heating can prepare the cylinder before the morning and evening demand periods, and a well-insulated modern cylinder helps retain stored heat between uses. If hot water is required repeatedly throughout the day, capacity becomes more valuable because it reduces reliance on waiting for a full reheat.

Some cylinders include dual immersion positions. A lower element can heat the full volume, while an upper element can provide a quicker top-up to the upper portion of the tank. This can be useful where demand varies, although it does not replace correct sizing. A 120L cylinder cannot behave like a 200L cylinder simply because it has a boost function.

Choose a size that fits the installation space

Before ordering, check more than the cylinder’s litre capacity. Measure the available height, diameter, doorways, loft access and route from the delivery point to the final position. A tall slim cylinder may suit a narrow cupboard, while a shorter wider model may be better under restricted ceiling height.

You also need room for pipework, safety components and access for future servicing. An unvented mains-pressure cylinder requires correctly specified controls, including pressure and temperature safety protection, and discharge pipework must be installed in line with applicable regulations. It is not a product category where squeezing a cylinder into the smallest possible gap is a good long-term decision.

For a direct replacement, measure the existing unit but do not assume its capacity was correct. Older cylinders are often oversized, undersized or poorly insulated. A replacement is an opportunity to reassess hot-water use, available electrical supply and whether the household’s needs have changed.

Match the cylinder to the water-heating system

Direct electric cylinders use immersion elements to heat stored water. They are a practical option where there is no gas boiler, where an all-electric hot-water solution is required, or where a property needs a simple replacement with dependable stored capacity.

A heat-pump water heater generally benefits from a larger cylinder than a direct electric equivalent. Heat pumps operate efficiently by heating water more gradually, so additional stored volume helps cover demand while allowing the system to run at an efficient pace. For this reason, a household moving from a direct electric cylinder to an air-source heat-pump water heater should not automatically choose the same litre capacity.

Point-of-use instant water heaters and compact under-sink units are different again. They are designed for local demand, such as a kitchen sink or hand basin, rather than supplying several bathrooms. They can be an effective answer for an extension, utility room, garden office or commercial wash area where installing a whole-house cylinder would be unnecessary.

Do not overlook mains pressure and outlet performance

A correctly sized unvented cylinder can provide strong hot-water performance at several outlets, but the incoming mains-water supply sets the limit. If flow or pressure into the property is poor, installing a larger cylinder alone will not create a powerful shower.

Check the mains flow rate and pressure, especially in older properties or areas where supply can vary. Your installer should also consider pipe sizes, pressure-reducing valves, expansion provision and the expected simultaneous demand. A generous cylinder capacity is only one part of a satisfying shower and bath experience.

This is particularly relevant for landlords and renovators. The property may have enough stored hot water on paper, yet occupants can still experience disappointing performance if the system components are mismatched or the supply is restricted.

A practical way to make the final choice

Start by identifying the property’s heaviest likely hour of use. Then consider the number of regular occupants, whether baths are common, the shower flow rate, and how quickly the cylinder can recover after use. Finally, confirm the physical dimensions and whether the system is direct electric, heat-pump based or point-of-use.

Where you are between two capacities, the larger option is often sensible for a growing family, a rental property or a home with a bath and multiple regular shower users. The trade-off is higher purchase cost, more installation space and potentially more standing heat loss, although modern insulation significantly reduces that loss. For a single occupant with modest needs, oversizing can mean paying to heat water that is rarely used.

Unvented cylinder installation and associated safety controls should be handled by a suitably qualified installer.
