How to Size Hot Water Cylinders for Your Home

A cylinder that is too small tends to reveal itself at the worst possible moment: halfway through the second shower, when the bath is running, or just as a tenant needs hot water. Go too large, and you pay to heat more stored water than the property needs. Knowing how to size hot water cylinders means balancing household demand, available space, heating input and the way people actually use water.

For most homes, capacity in litres is the starting point, not the final answer. A 120L cylinder can be an excellent fit for a couple with efficient showers, while a family of four with a large bath and back-to-back morning routines may need 180L or more. The correct choice depends on peak demand and recovery as much as the number printed on the cylinder.

Start with your household’s hot-water routine

Think about the busiest hour of the day. This is usually the morning, when showers, handwashing and kitchen use may overlap, or the early evening when baths and showers follow one another. A cylinder needs enough stored hot water to cover that peak without relying on a long wait for reheating.

As a practical guide, these capacities suit many UK properties:

  • 10L to 30L: point-of-use hot water for a cloakroom basin, kitchenette, small office or single sink.
  • 50L to 80L: one person or light use in a compact flat, studio or small annexe.
  • 100L to 120L: one to two people, typically using showers rather than frequent baths.

Allow a margin for colder incoming mains water in winter, higher shower flow rates and real-life habits.

If two showers will regularly run together, size for both. If one bathroom is used after another with a reasonable gap, a smaller cylinder with good recovery may be sufficient. This is where a simple bedroom count can mislead.

How to size hot water cylinders by recovery time

Stored capacity covers the first period of demand. Recovery time determines how quickly the cylinder is ready again. With an electric cylinder, recovery depends largely on the immersion heater output and the amount of water being reheated.

A typical 3kW immersion heater will take several hours to heat a full cylinder from cold. That is usually perfectly workable where heating is scheduled overnight or during lower-cost electricity periods, and where household demand is predictable. It is less forgiving if several people need successive showers after the stored supply has been used.

Larger cylinders store more hot water but take longer to reheat using the same element. Higher-output electric supplies can improve recovery, but they must be planned correctly. A standard domestic circuit, the property’s electrical capacity and the manufacturer’s requirements all need consideration. Do not assume a larger or additional element can simply be fitted without electrical design and installation work.

Heat-pump water heaters change the calculation again. They use far less electricity per unit of heat than direct electric immersion heating, but generally recover more slowly. For that reason, heat-pump cylinders are often sized more generously. A larger store allows the system to heat water steadily and efficiently, rather than being forced to chase short, sharp periods of demand.

Match the cylinder to your electricity tariff

If you have an off-peak or time-of-use tariff, choose a capacity that can store enough hot water during the lower-cost period to cover most of the following day. A correctly sized electric cylinder can make good use of scheduled heating and built-in controls.

A cylinder that is undersized may need expensive daytime top-ups. One that is oversized may lose more heat over time and use unnecessary space, even if it is well insulated. Look at standing heat loss as well as litres, especially when comparing models of similar capacity.

Check the system type, pressure and installation space

Most modern mains-pressure cylinders are unvented. They can provide strong hot-water performance at outlets when the incoming cold-water supply has adequate flow and pressure. The cylinder alone cannot improve a poor mains supply, so checking the property’s incoming water performance is essential before specifying a high-demand system.

An unvented installation also requires the correct safety components, including pressure and temperature relief protection, an expansion vessel where required, suitable discharge pipework and controls. In England and Wales, unvented hot-water cylinders must be installed and commissioned by a competent person qualified for the work. Landlords and renovators should factor this into both programme and budget, rather than treating the cylinder as a like-for-like appliance swap.

Space is often the deciding factor in a replacement project. Measure the installation area carefully, including height, diameter, pipe connections, access for maintenance and the route into the property. A cylinder may fit the airing cupboard on paper but be impossible to manoeuvre through a tight loft hatch or around a stair turn.

Also consider weight. A full 200L cylinder holds roughly 200kg of water before the weight of the unit itself is added. Wall-mounted compact cylinders need a suitable load-bearing wall and correct fixings. Larger floor-standing models need a sound, level base.

Avoid the two common sizing mistakes

The first mistake is choosing the smallest cylinder that appears to meet an average daily figure. Hot-water systems are sized for peaks, not just totals. A household may use modest amounts across a day but still require enough stored water for two showers and a bath in quick succession.

The second is assuming bigger is always safer. Oversizing can mean a higher purchase cost, more installation constraints and greater standing losses. It can also be unnecessary where a household has low-flow showers, staggered routines and reliable programmed reheating.

For a rental property, consider likely occupancy rather than the current tenant’s habits. A two-bedroom flat may sometimes house two people and sometimes four. Selecting a cylinder with a modest allowance for normal occupancy changes can prevent complaints and call-outs, provided the available electrical supply and space support it.

A straightforward sizing example

Take a three-person household with one bathroom, mainly shower use and an occasional bath. If showers are taken one after another in the morning, a 150L to 180L mains-pressure electric cylinder is often a sensible range. The final choice depends on shower flow rate, whether a bath is frequently used, and whether the cylinder can reheat during the day.

Now consider a couple in a one-bedroom flat with efficient showers, no bath and scheduled overnight electric heating. A 100L to 120L cylinder may provide a better balance of comfort, running costs and cupboard space. For a kitchen sink in an outbuilding or small commercial wash area, a 10L to 30L point-of-use unit avoids heating a whole-house cylinder for a single outlet.

When comparing options, write down the number of occupants, bathrooms, shower type, bath use, peak-time routine, available installation dimensions and electricity arrangement. That short brief gives an installer or supplier far more useful information than simply asking for a cylinder “for a three-bed house”.
