A failed immersion heater, leaking tank or unreliable supply of hot water can turn an electric cylinder replacement into an urgent job. However, choosing the nearest-looking cylinder is rarely the best answer. The right replacement must suit the household’s hot-water demand, available space, water pressure and existing pipework, while meeting the requirements of a safe installation.

For homeowners, landlords and renovators, the most useful starting point is simple: identify what the current cylinder does well, where it falls short and whether the replacement should be like-for-like or part of a wider upgrade.

When an electric cylinder replacement makes sense

Electric hot-water cylinders are designed to store a usable volume of hot water, ready for baths, showers, sinks and household cleaning. They are a practical option where there is no gas supply, where a property is being electrified, or where a separate and controllable hot-water system is preferred.

Replacement is usually worth considering when a cylinder has started leaking, takes too long to reheat, regularly trips electrical protection, produces inconsistent water temperature or no longer provides enough hot water for the household. Heavy limescale, corrosion around connections and repeated immersion-heater failures can also point to a cylinder approaching the end of its useful life.

A direct electric cylinder is often the straightforward replacement choice where electricity is the only heat source. It uses electric immersion elements to heat stored water. If the existing installation has a boiler coil, solar coil or another indirect heat source, the cylinder type needs checking carefully before ordering. Replacing an indirect cylinder with a direct model, or the other way round, changes how the system operates and may require alterations to the pipework and controls.

Start with cylinder type and water pressure

Before comparing litres, establish whether the current system is vented or unvented. This affects the replacement cylinder, the required safety components and who can carry out the work.

A vented cylinder is generally supplied by a cold-water storage cistern, often located in a loft. It operates at lower pressure and commonly works with a separate header tank. An unvented cylinder is supplied directly from the mains and can deliver strong, balanced pressure at outlets when the incoming mains supply is adequate. It needs specific safety controls, including a temperature and pressure relief valve, expansion vessel and correctly sized discharge pipework.

An unvented electric cylinder replacement must be installed and commissioned by a suitably qualified person. In England and Wales, this normally means an installer with the relevant unvented hot-water qualification. The work must comply with Building Regulations, and the installer should provide the required notification and documentation where applicable.

Do not assume a mains-pressure cylinder will automatically improve shower performance. The incoming water flow rate and dynamic pressure still set the limit. If the mains supply is weak, restricted or shared by multiple flats, a larger unvented cylinder will store more water but cannot create additional incoming flow. An installer can assess this before work begins.

Choose capacity around real household use

Cylinder capacity is one of the most important decisions in an electric cylinder replacement. Too small, and the final shower of the morning may run cool. Too large, and you pay to heat water that is seldom used while giving up more cupboard, airing-cupboard or utility-room space.

As a broad guide, a compact 10L or 15L point-of-use unit can serve a hand basin or small kitchen sink. For a one-bedroom flat with modest demand, a 50L to 80L stored hot-water solution may be suitable, depending on bathing habits. Homes with one bathroom often consider around 100L to 150L, while family properties with multiple bathrooms may require 180L, 210L or more.

These figures are only a starting point. A household of two people taking quick showers has very different demand from two people who regularly fill a bath. Consider how many bathrooms may be used close together, whether a rainfall shower is installed, and whether the property has high-flow taps. Landlords should also allow for the way tenants may use hot water rather than sizing solely around the minimum possible demand.

Recovery time matters alongside capacity. A larger cylinder offers a bigger reserve, but the immersion rating, thermostat settings and electricity supply affect how quickly it reheats. Some cylinders use more than one immersion heater, allowing the upper portion to be heated first when a smaller amount of hot water is needed. This can be useful for properties with variable occupancy or for improving day-to-day control.

Measure the installation space properly

A replacement cylinder can look compact on a product page but still be difficult to position once pipe connections, valves and service access are allowed for. Measure the height, diameter and doorway route, then check overhead clearance for pipework and immersion-heater access.

Wall-mounted cylinders can be an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and small commercial spaces, provided the wall is suitable for the full operating weight. A 50L cylinder holds roughly 50kg of water before the weight of the unit itself is considered. Floor-standing models need a stable, level base that can support the filled cylinder.

Also check the location of the electrical supply. A dedicated circuit, suitable local isolation and correct cable sizing may be required. Electrical work should be completed and tested by a competent electrician where necessary. The cylinder installation instructions should always be followed, particularly for clearances, safety-valve connections and earthing arrangements.

Do not overlook the components around the cylinder

A reliable hot-water system depends on more than the tank. During replacement, it is sensible to inspect the components that protect the system and control pressure. On an unvented installation, an ageing expansion vessel, pressure-reducing valve or relief valve may need replacement or servicing at the same time.

The discharge route from a safety valve is not optional detail. It must be correctly designed and terminated so that a release can be seen safely without creating a risk of scalding. Existing pipework may not meet current requirements, particularly in older installations, so it should be assessed rather than reused by default.

Water quality is another consideration. In hard-water areas, scale can shorten immersion-heater life and reduce heating efficiency. A suitable scale-control approach and regular maintenance may protect the new cylinder, although the best option depends on local water conditions and the product specification.

For landlords, a replacement is also a good time to confirm that access to isolation valves and controls is practical. A system that is difficult to inspect or isolate can turn a minor fault into a disruptive maintenance visit.

Consider whether a heat-pump water heater is a better upgrade

A conventional electric cylinder is often the right answer for a direct, space-efficient replacement. It is particularly practical where budget, installation simplicity or room layout make a heat-pump system unsuitable. Modern insulated cylinders can retain heat effectively, and timed heating can help households use off-peak electricity tariffs where available.

However, properties with sufficient installation space and a consistent hot-water requirement may benefit from an air-source heat-pump water heater. These use heat from the surrounding air to heat stored water and can use considerably less electricity than a standard direct immersion cylinder in suitable conditions. The trade-off is higher initial cost, different siting requirements, airflow considerations and the need to plan for condensate drainage.

There is no universal winner. A compact flat needing dependable hot water at one outlet may be best served by a small electric unit. A busy family home replacing a large cylinder may find that a heat-pump water heater offers stronger long-term running-cost potential. The practical choice depends on demand, available space, electrical arrangements and the owner’s budget.

Plan the replacement before the old cylinder fails

If a cylinder is already leaking or has stopped heating, record its dimensions, capacity, cylinder type and connection positions before it is removed. Photographs of the cupboard, valves and pipework can help an installer or supplier identify likely requirements. It is also worth checking whether the property needs hot water restored the same day, as this may favour a close like-for-like replacement over a more involved system redesign.
