A heat pump water heater can reduce the electricity needed to produce domestic hot water by taking low-grade warmth from the surrounding air rather than creating all of the heat directly through an immersion element. For households replacing an ageing electric cylinder, planning a renovation or looking for a lower-energy hot-water system without installing a whole-home heat pump, it can be a practical upgrade - provided the property has the right space.

Unlike a standard electric cylinder, this is not simply a like-for-like appliance swap. Location, available air volume, cylinder capacity, condensate drainage and installation arrangements all matter. Get these details right and you gain reliable stored hot water with significantly more efficient day-to-day operation.

How a heat pump water heater works

An air-source heat pump water heater uses a fan to draw air across an evaporator. The system extracts heat from that air, raises it to a useful temperature through a refrigeration cycle, and transfers it into the stored water in the cylinder. Electricity still powers the fan, compressor and controls, but the system moves heat rather than producing every unit of heat electrically.

This is why heat pump cylinders can achieve a much higher efficiency than a conventional immersion-only cylinder in suitable conditions. Their performance is usually described by a coefficient of performance, or COP. A COP of 3, for example, means the appliance can deliver around three units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. Actual results vary with air temperature, the selected water temperature, installation conditions and household demand.

Most units also include an electric backup heater. This can support hot-water production during high demand, assist with anti-legionella cycles and provide reassurance when conditions are less favourable. It is useful, but the aim is for the heat pump to do most of the routine work.

Where a heat pump water heater works best

These systems need access to a good supply of air. Depending on the model and installation design, they may take air from the room where they are fitted, use ducting to draw and discharge air elsewhere, or work with an external-air arrangement. A garage, utility room, plant room, basement or larger airing cupboard can be a sensible location, but every installation should be checked against the manufacturer’s clearances and air-volume requirements.

The unit produces cooler, drier air as it runs. That can be useful in a utility area, but it may be unwelcome in a small heated living space. There is also fan and compressor noise to consider. Modern systems are designed for domestic use, yet they are not silent, so position matters as much as capacity.

Because the cylinder creates condensate, it needs a suitable drain point. This is often straightforward in a utility room or garage but can add work in a first-floor cupboard. A properly planned installation should also allow access for servicing and leave sufficient room around the appliance for airflow.

For properties with no gas supply, high electric hot-water usage or an existing direct electric cylinder nearing the end of its life, the case can be particularly strong. Choosing the right cylinder capacity

Capacity should be based on how hot water is actually used, not just the number of bedrooms. A couple with one shower and modest bath use may need far less stored water than a family of four with two morning showers, frequent baths and a dishwasher running every day.

As a broad starting point, smaller households may look at cylinders around 150L to 200L, while family homes often require 200L to 260L. The right answer depends on incoming mains pressure, shower type, preferred water temperature, bath size and whether hot-water use tends to happen in one concentrated period.

A larger cylinder gives more reserve, but it takes more room and represents a higher initial outlay. Oversizing can also mean maintaining a greater volume of hot water than the household needs. Undersizing, on the other hand, can push the system towards electric backup heating or leave little recovery time after a busy morning.

An installer or knowledgeable supplier can help match the cylinder to the property’s hot-water pattern. It is worth having that conversation before ordering, especially if you are changing from a vented cylinder, a combi boiler or a small electric storage heater.

Mains pressure and unvented considerations

Many heat pump water heaters are mains-pressure, unvented cylinders. They can provide strong shower performance when the incoming water supply is adequate, but the system must include the correct safety controls. Pressure-reducing valves, expansion vessels, tundishes and temperature and pressure relief arrangements are not optional extras to overlook.

Unvented hot-water cylinders must be installed and commissioned by a suitably qualified person. This protects both the household and the warranty, and it ensures the discharge pipework, pressure controls and electrical supply have been correctly specified. If you are buying for a renovation or rental property, build this work into the budget from the outset.

What affects running costs

A heat pump water heater does not have one fixed running cost. The savings compared with direct electric heating depend on how efficiently the appliance operates in your property and what electricity tariff you pay. Colder intake air, very high target temperatures, poor airflow and frequent use of the immersion heater can all reduce the advantage.

The strongest results usually come from sensible controls. Set the system to heat water when demand is low, use a timer where appropriate and avoid routinely selecting a higher water temperature than needed. Where solar PV is available, a daytime heating schedule can make good use of generated electricity, although the cylinder must still be operated in line with its hygiene and anti-legionella settings.

It is also sensible to distinguish between lower energy use and instant payback. A heat pump cylinder costs more to buy and install than a basic electric cylinder. The value is normally realised over time through reduced consumption, particularly in homes with regular hot-water demand. For a rarely used guest annexe or a small sink-only application, a compact point-of-use water heater may be the more proportionate choice.

Installation details to check before buying

Before selecting a model, confirm the available height, footprint and route into the property. A tall cylinder can be difficult to manoeuvre through tight hallways, loft hatches or staircases. Check the floor can support the filled weight and that the planned location has suitable drainage, ventilation and electrical provision.

You should also establish whether existing plumbing can be adapted for an unvented cylinder and whether any old cold-water storage tanks can be removed. If the property has weak incoming mains flow or pressure, address that before assuming a new cylinder will transform shower performance.

For trade buyers and renovators, a clear specification avoids costly changes later. Confirm cylinder volume, connection positions, ducting requirements where applicable, noise expectations, immersion rating, warranty terms and the accessories required for the installation. Ordering the cylinder without the necessary safety components can delay commissioning.

A practical option for electric hot water

A heat pump water heater is best viewed as a dedicated hot-water upgrade rather than a universal answer to every heating requirement. It can be an efficient fit for households that need dependable stored hot water, have suitable installation space and want to move away from the high running costs of direct electric immersion heating.

The key is not to choose on capacity or headline efficiency alone. Choose a model that suits the household’s real water use, the available location and the property’s plumbing. With the right specification, professional installation and straightforward support when questions arise, it becomes a long-term piece of home infrastructure rather than another compromise in the airing cupboard.
