A kitchen tap that takes minutes to run hot wastes water, energy and patience. If the sink is a long way from the main cylinder or boiler, a compact local unit can make washing up, food preparation and handwashing far more convenient. Knowing how to choose kitchen water heater starts with one practical question: do you need a small amount of stored hot water, or hot water on demand?

For most single-sink kitchens, an under-sink electric water heater is the straightforward answer. The right choice depends on how the kitchen is used, the available electrical supply and the plumbing already in place.

Start with the hot-water demand at the sink

Think about what happens at the tap during a normal day. A kitchen used mainly for rinsing cups and washing hands has a very different demand from one where a household regularly washes dishes by hand, fills pans and cleans baking trays.

A small 5-litre unit can suit very light handwashing or occasional rinsing. A 10-litre model is often a sensible starting point for a standard kitchen sink, giving a useful amount of stored hot water without taking up much cupboard space. Check the space before choosing capacity

Measure the cupboard or wall space carefully, including room for pipe connections, isolation valves and access for servicing. Do not measure only the heater body. A compact water heater still needs clearance around it, and the doors must close without crushing hoses or cables.

Also consider the weight. Water weighs one kilogram per litre, so a filled 15-litre heater is considerably heavier than its empty weight. For lower running costs, focus first on suitable capacity and sensible temperature settings. Heating far more water than you use is wasteful. Equally, setting the temperature too low can compromise hygiene and leave too little usable hot water. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for temperature adjustment and maintenance.

A local heater can also reduce wasted water compared with drawing hot water from a distant central cylinder. The benefit is greatest when the main hot-water source is several metres away and the kitchen tap is used in short bursts throughout the day.

Do not overlook safety, installation and warranty

Landlords and property managers should also retain service records and ensure tenants know not to obstruct discharge outlets or alter controls.

A unit with pipes entering from a different side or orientation may still be suitable, but it could add time and cost to the installation.
